I'm sure that the XS key implementation in the host software is complex (at least that's the impression I got from various conversations with Emagic) and adding the development, infrastructure and support costs across the other applications and their user-base would not be trivial. So, why are we not seeing the XS key protection method being employed in Apple's other products? Apple rebranded the blue emagic keys into snazzzy white Apple-styled ones (one of which I wouldn't mind having, although I still like having something with "emagic" written on it to remind me of days gone by). Now I'm not an expert in this area, but from the little bit of research I have done, this seems to be the case.

The only *cracks* I have seen from a cursory investigation is a version of Logic Express (which does not employ XS key protection) rebadged as "Pro" which it clearly isn't, and an incredibly fragile and convoluted procedure to obtain demo XS keys and carefully patch and keep resetting them every 3 hours in order to use Logic Pro in demo mode. In an era when you can cheerfully log onto bittorrent and P2P sites and download *every* one of Apple's applications (Final Cut Studio, Soundtrack Pro, Logic Express, even Shake their high-end graphics tool) - the only one which *cannot* be run by unauthorised users is Logic Pro (and Waveburner! ) At least yet (as 6.x was out, what, 3 years ago now?)

(Logic 5's implementation was cracked on the PC platform, not sure about the Mac.) However, 6.x and upwards have improved the strength of the key protection, and it has not been cracked on the Mac. From what I understand, the XSKey has to date not been cracked, at least on the Mac platform. Now I'm sure officially it's frowned upon - but let's look at the Apple/Emagic situation.Īpple now own a copy protection mechanism that works. What interests me is companies' attitudes to piracy. I'm not starting yet another piracy debate etc as that stuff has been done to death and is a complex issue and we all know the various arguments *yawn*.
